Basic Skills Requirement

Verification of Basic Skills Requirement

Effective July 9, 2021

Students must satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) to earn a teaching credential and verification of meeting this requirement must be uploaded when applying for a credential program at CSUDH. There have been some exceptions during the COVID-19 pandemic depending on the semester a student matriculated, please check with your program for details on these exceptions.

There are several ways to meet the BSR including:

  • A passing cumulative score on all three parts of CBEST. A total score (the sum of Reading, Mathematics, and Writing scaled scores) of 123 is required for passing status. It is possible to pass the CBEST with a scaled score on one or two sections as low as 37, provided that the total score is 123 or higher. It is not possible, however, to pass the CBEST if any section score is below 37, regardless of how high the total score may be.
  •  Other examinations including CSET Multiple Subjects with Writing, AP Exams, ACT/SAT Scores, and CSU Early Assessment or Placement Examinations may be used. For qualifying scores and more information, see the CTC information
  • Coursework at an accredited college/university level in Reading, Mathematics, and Composition. Both lower and upper division courses can be used as long as the course descriptions clearly meet the areas outlined by the CTC.
  • A combination of exams and coursework. For example, you may meet the math requirement through coursework and have passing CBEST scores on reading and writing. A passing score on individual sections is a scaled score of 41.

The coursework and combination of coursework and examinations to meet BSR was approved in late June 2021. See the information on the coursework that will qualify and directions for submitting transcripts, as well as the form to submit below. Students can conduct their own student self-check for courses using the Student Self-Check for Progress Towards Meeting the Basic Skills Requirement.

Please plan ahead if you want to have your coursework evaluated as you will need official transcripts and processing can take 4-6 weeks. Improper submission of documents will delay the completion of your evaluation!

Note: Please keep a copy of all original documents verifying basic skills., as you will need to submit them again when you apply for your preliminary credential at the end of your program.
